Tips and Shortcuts: Mouse Functionality, Icons, Hotkeys, Smart Searching, Sticky Notes
Welcome back. This is Ben Dappen and I would like to talk a little bit about some tips and shortcuts for using the EMR.
Let's begin in Poseidon's patient dashboard with a short description of different ways to use the mouse cursor to view different parts of your patient records and take actions.
First, you can view detailed information about almost any item simply by hovering the mouse cursor over that item. Hover over a SOAP note, for example, to see the contents of the note. Hovering over a facility shows the address and contact information for the facility, as well as a map.
Second, right-clicking: right click gives you a menu of actions for an item. Right click on a medication, for example allows you to renew, discontinue, replace, delete, edit, learn more at, or create a faxable form. Right click on a SOAP note will bring up a menu of note actions: continue an unsigned note or review a signed note, change the note title, add a sub note, taking billing actions, etc.
An ordinary single mouse click will generally open an item for editing or viewing. For example, we can click once on an allergy or intolerance, on a vaccine, or on just about any other item in the dashboard. Notice that a single click on a relationship will open the dashboard of the related patient in a new tab.
Finally, double-clicking is used in some places. You can double click on the patient's photo to open the photo manager. Or, double click in a notes field to edit. When a SOAP note is open, the boxes around the note can be expanded or tucked away by double-clicking on any title bar.
That pretty much covers a quick overview of mouse cursor functionality in our EMR. As a rule of thumb, you can hover on an item to view details, you can right-click and item to see possible actions, you can just click it to take the most common action, and some items can be double-clicked.
WHAT THE ICONS MEAN
Next, let's talk about the icons on the site. We use a few icons repeatedly to signify certain common actions.
SOAP or encounter notes have their own set of icons that convey basic information about the notes at-a-glance.
And taking a look at the patient record for Poseidon's brother Hades, we can see a few other SOAP icons
Now that we know a little more about the icons are all about, let's talk about our hot key keyboard shortcuts.
HOT KEY KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS
Unusually for a web-based platform, our EMR lets you use quick keyboard shortcuts to perform some common actions. You are probably already familiar with the use of Ctrl, S to save, which you can use inside the SOAP window to save a note.
You should be able to pick up our other shortcuts pretty quickly. When you are in a patient's dashboard or soap note, pressing Ctrl, Shift, R (for Rx) opens the add prescription box. Ctrl, Shift, F opens the manage facilities box. And you can create an order – for a test, radiology scans, etc. – by using Ctrl, Shift, O . You can even control your zoom level by using Ctrl, Plus and Ctrl, Minus , respectively.
The full list of keyboard shortcuts is always accessible via the help drop down menu at the top of the screen.
Now let's briefly discuss how to get the most out of your searches in the MD HQ EMR. This is something that you will use a lot, so it's definitely worth familiarizing yourself with our excellent search functionality.
First of all, you can always search using whole words or numbers (like a patient ID number, zip code, or dosage) OR fragments of words or numbers. Whatever you choose to enter, the information can be added in any order and the system will search as you type.
So, let's say that you get a scrawled message from your new intern saying that you need to call "H.L." immediately, and you want to pull up the right record before you call. You can just type in the initials: H space L, and it looks like this narrows it down to two patients. Start adding the phone number that your intern took down, "555", and you have your match. You can also always hover over search matches for more information.
The next search tip comes in handy when you are trying to retrieve information from one of the huge databases on the system – like the prescription drug database, or the complete list of CPT orders, which each have more than 100,000 entries. We have the Schedule/Add Orders box open here, so let's try searching for a Urinalysis. To keep searches more manageable, the default is to show the most commonly used orders that match your search criteria. However, you can easily view all orders that match your search criteria by typing a "plus" anywhere in the search bar. As with all searches, you can hover over individual results for more information. You can also easily add matching results to your preferred short list by right-clicking and selecting "Add as preferred".
The same tips come in handy when you are adding text and actions to a SOAP note using our flexible autotext system. We will discuss flexible autotext tips in more detail in another video.
The last thing I want to tell you about is a little function that we have for miscellaneous notes. on any page you can click the stick note icon that appears beside the 'search patients' bar to post "sticky notes " These notes will automatically pin where you save it, but it can be moved and re-pinned elsewhere. Sticky notes can also be hidden... hidden notes will re-appear when the page is loaded in the future.
OK, That's the six minute introduction to some of the shortcuts and tips for using the mouse to find information and actions, understanding icons, using hot-key keyboard shortcuts, smart searching, and sticky notes. There's a lot more to see, so I hope you'll hop on the free demo and try it for yourself.
